BBL stands for BroadBand Light (BBL®) and is an advanced form of a traditional IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) device.
It works by delivering intense light energy stimulating your skin cells to regenerate and restore your skin by working with your body’s natural healing response to improve discoloration and increase collagen and elastin production.
BBL® HEROic is the latest advancement in BBL technology, released in 2024.
BBL® HEROic is BroadBand Light (BBL®) High Energy Rapid Output (HERO). It features a proprietary Intelligent Control (IC), Skin Positioning System (SPS), and Autodynamic Pulsing (AP), not available in other BBL or IPL devices.
The SPS means the clinician’s speed is tracked, while moving slowly or accelerating, enhancing treatment accuracy. The IC is essentially the ‘brain’ of the device, which adjusts to variations in hand piece movement, speed, rotation, and patient curvature. AP allows a fully automated pulse delivery system, which means a more precise delivery of treatment. No stripes or gaps like other BBL or IPL devices risk. BBL® HEROic also has advanced cooling technology making the treatment more comfortable.
BBL® HEROic is suitable for all skin types and treats skin conditions associated with ageing, active lifestyles and sun damage. The broadband light energy is used to treat hyperpigmentation, age spots, melasma, solar lentigines (freckles), brown spots, skin laxity, acne; and vascular lesions including rosacea, small vessels, port wine stains, cherry angiomas, hemangiomas, small facial veins (telangiectasias), and spider veins.
BBL® HEROic also has a new 532+ filter. A unique narrow-bandpass filter, ranging from 500nm to 650nm, it addresses the small thready vessels around the nose and targets low-contrast recalcitrant pigmented lesions without impacting the adjoining areas.

Some of the risks of BBL® HEROic treatments include:
- Temporary redness and hot feeling (common)
- Blistering during the treatment
- Scarring
- Burns.
BBL® in any form should not be used if you have an infection, are immunocompromised, pregnant, have a propensity for keloid scar formations, or who are on photo-sensitising medications. BBL® is also not suitable for you if you have a haemorrhagic (bleeding) disorder or haemostatic (bleeding) dysfunction; or have used isotretinoin (Accutane) within the past 6-12 months. The use of smoking and nicotine products may delay healing.
Avoid alcohol in the week prior to your treatment because it can increase the risk of bruising and swelling. Avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications 2 weeks prior. Hair should be removed from the treating area prior to the treatment. Self-tanning products should not be applied to the skin for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment, and direct sun exposure should also be limited for the 3-4 weeks prior to treatment.
The area to be treated will be cleaned to remove any dirt, makeup and moisture. Treatment times vary depending on the area being treated. Colourless gel is applied to the area being treated. Some mild discomfort may be experienced, with a flicking sensation on the skin. Eye protection will be provided for you to wear during your treatment. You will likely feel warmth on the skin for 30-60 minutes after the treatment. As you heal pigmented areas targeted may begin to darken and feel rough. Between 1-4 weeks, any remaining pigment will slough or peel off itself. Note: different areas of the body heal faster than others (e.g., the face typically takes 1 week, whereas legs may take up to 4 weeks).
Cool compresses or ice packs can provide some comfort after treatment. Apply sunblock to the treated areas for at least 2 weeks following treatment to avoid excessive sunburn reaction or post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Do not use facial products with retinoids or other potentially irritating ingredients for 2 weeks following your treatment. Aspirin and alcohol should be avoided for 12-48 hours after your treatment.
The cost of all BBL® treatments will depend on the condition being treated and the area being treated, with prices ranging from $200 for small vascular lesions, $625 for a full face, to $1170 for full face, neck and chest. Email us at [email protected] or call our Care Team on (02) 4002 4150.

You will likely see visible results after at least 1-2 treatments, spaced 4 weeks apart. This is in contrast to traditional IPL, which typically requires at least 5-6 treatments. How quickly you see results will depend on the treating concern and the extent of treatment required.
Face, neck, decollete, arms, legs, back, buttocks, abdomen.
It is typically unnecessary as BBL® HEROic’s sapphire crystal keeps the epidermis cool during treatment while allowing light to reach its target safely.
BBL® HEROic has higher peak power than traditional IPL devices, delivering 3 x the peak power and 4 x the speed combined with 2 x the cooling, which means a more predictable, comfortable, and repeatable result. With BBL® HEROic hundreds of colours of light flash at the same time, whereas IPL is a single colour of light. Hundreds of lights mean BBL® HEROic is able to treat multiple concerns at the same time. IPL first emerged in the mid 1990s to primarily address pigment and vascular conditions. BBL® arrived in 2004. BBL® HERO in 2020 (High Energy Rapid Output, i.e., more advanced cooling, peak power and speed. 9 x faster than traditional IPL devices. Finally, BBL® HEROic was launched in 2024, incorporating intelligent technology and further advances in power and cooling capabilities making it faster, more comfortable, and more precise with better results.
BBL® HEROic, has revolutionary Intelligent Control (IC) and Skin Positioning System™ (SPS™) technology, empowers providers to effortlessly deliver highly effective treatments for every person treated. HEROic’s automated technology reduces the overall treatment time, automates pulse placement to prevent issues like striping and pulse stacking, enhances comfort, and delivers better outcomes for various skin conditions.
